11/12/2022 05:30 PM - 09:00 PM PT

Description

Salmon Tales is the annual gala fundraiser for Salish School of Spokane. The event features a salmon dinner (chicken & vegan options) and performances by SSOS students. Funds raised at Salmon Tales provide general operating support for Salish  School of Spokane so that we can teach our language and culture to children, parents and community members,  engage in traditional cultural practices, and provide a rich, dynamic education for our students.

This year's COVID precautionary  measures will include:  1.  strong ventilation; 2. cooks and food servers will be masked; 3. masks will be available for attendees who would like to wear one when not eating

The Mission of Salish School of Spokane is:  Dynamic Salish Language Revitalization powering cultural renewal and building a stronger, healthier community.

We believe that we can achieve our mission by building an authentic Salish community for children, families and Elders that empowers our people to: 1) recover from genocide; 2) re-establish intergenerational cultural and social connections, and; 3) live productive, sustainable and healthy lives.

We are achieving our mission through five interrelated programs: a) Salish language immersion preschool and family support services for children aged 3-5 years; b) Salish immersion elementary school for children aged 5-12 years; c) year-round evening Salish language and culture classes for the parents and community members; d) a school-based intensive Salish language teacher training program; e) Salish language curriculum  development,  and; f) technical training for other Indignous language communities.

SSOS is not just a “school”. We are a grass-roots community organization seeking justice and striving to improve ourselves and our community using a schooling model. Just as the agents of genocide and colonization used residential boarding schools to break cultural and inter-generational connections among Salish people, we are using schooling to rebuild those same connections and ensure a better future for ourselves, children and families.
