Description

2026 Summer Immersion Symposium at Salish School of Spokane, June 25-26, 2026

Indigenous Language Fluency Transfer System Training: ILFTS Level 1 Delivery and Level 2 Language Development

Goal:  provide training for licensed ILFTS users that allows them to master delivery of the ILFTS Level 1 Language Module in full immersion and/or to learn how to develop the ILFTS Level 1 Stories Module and the ILFTS Level 2 Language Module.

The ILFTS provides a framework that can be adapted to any Indigenous language to create a comprehensive, sequenced system for training new, advanced fluent speakers. The ILFTS has features that make it a unique and effective tool for Indigenous language communities:

  • It is a proven tool for training new advanced fluent speakers of endangered Indigenous languages;
  • It follows a communicative approach to language learning;
  • It can be developed by regular people and does not require previous specialized technical skills or linguistics education;
  • It empowers learners from a wide variety of backgrounds to be successful language learners, and;
  • It can be licensed for use at no cost.

Salish School of Spokane uses its n̓səl̓xčin̓ Fluency Transfer System to train new advanced fluent speakers, teachers, and parents. Our new fluent speakers make it possible for us to operate a full-immersion school serving students from 1 year old to 8th. We have more than 50 new fluent speakers of our language, and our youth are becoming fluent speakers and have high achievement in literacy, math, science, culture, physical education, music and art.
